Introductions
Hey, I'm Will 👋
I'm a native Brit who has lived in South Korea since 2016. My time here has taken me through the dreaded hagwons, a master's degree in Korean Linguistics from SNU, through to teaching myself how to code and teaching graduate students cross-cultural communication.
I got into languages in my teens, after doing work experience at a bank in London and deciding I firmly did not want to pursue office life (oh how wrong I may have been!), mixed with an increasing interest in Japanese and Korean media. I ended up studying Japanese at undergrad and teaching myself Korean, doing a summer session at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies before doing a year abroad at Akita International University in the colder, northern reaches of Japan. After graduating, I set my sights on Korea and moved here as soon as I could, before pursuing a masters in Korean linguistics from SNU.
Around 2020, deep in the miserable pits my masters course, struggling to stay awake long enough to read all of my course materials, I was increasingly exposed to the world of coding, web development, UX/UI, and more. I jumped in head first and I haven't looked back. I have built games for my students (which they loved), helped a non-profit both with the frontend development and inter-org translation, built a hundred or more dead applications that now sit in my GitHub as a reminder of how far I have come, and more recently looked in to commercial EdTech. I am always looking for work, opportunities to contribute, people to talk software (and hardware!) with, and more.
These days my time is split between working out, playing guitar, teaching at Seoul University of Foreign Studies, building my side-projects, freelance coding, translation, proofreading, editing and more. Oh, and an almost crippling love of WoW and OSRS!
